A former pink sandstone farm built in 1791, this was home to several generations of Mennonites, including in particular the family of Nicolas Augsburger. However its name comes from that of Jacob Kupferschmitt, a truly remarkable character who is famous for having obtained exemption from armed national service in 1793 from the Revolutionary authorities for those of his religious faith, and was an early form of “conscientious objector”.
